Joachim Neu — The Why and How of PoS Ethereum’s Consensus Problem (ETHconomics @ Devconnect 2022)

LMD GHOST, Casper FFG, availability, finality, accountability, reorg-resilience, … — many protocols and properties bubble up in the context of Proof-of-Stake Ethereum. We discuss the application-specific economic and security needs that bear these requirements, and how some of these conflicting requirements can be reconciled through the abstraction of multi-ledger consensus, and the careful composition of more basic consensus protocols. The goal of this talk is to give the audience with a better understanding of the purpose of different consensus components of PoS Ethereum, how these components interact, and what to watch out for.
